Head Instructor: Luke Harwood

FIRST DEGREE BLACK BELT IN BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU

Professor Luke Harwood has 18 years of experience in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He received his black belt from Gracie Barra (GB), the worlds largest Jiu Jitsu team and was awarded black belt by his multiple time Jiu Jitsu World Champion instructor, Professor Tussa. Professor Luke has competed in many regional competitions as well as many large national competitions, most notably receiving the Bronze Medal in the 2021 No Gi Pan Ams tournament as a brown belt. Originally from Farmington, NM, he started training in 2006 in Farmington. At this time there was no formal training or academies to train at instead he used books and close friends to practice with. Shortly after starting to train, he then found and became friends with Professor Bryan Waltz (GB Colorado Springs) who was a purple belt at the time and started really experiencing what true Brazilian Jiu Jitsu technique and leverage can do. In 2007, Professor Harwood moved to Albuquerque, NM to attend the University of New Mexico. There he first met Professor Tussa, Professor Barata, and Professor Ortega (GB New Mexico) who provided more advanced training opportunities for Professor Harwood. There were many training sessions where Professor Harwood would train multiple times within a day for hours at a time. Professor Harwood moved back to Farmington, NM in 2015, where his career in construction took him. At the time Professor Harwood was a purple belt. Still with no formal Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academies in Farmington, Professor Harwood began instructing and training with a group of wrestlers, BJJ practitioners, and mixed martial arts fighters to continue his training. In addition Professor Harwood assisted in coaching his son’s local wrestling team for 3 years. In 2017, Professor Harwood made the decision to leave his extended family and job to move back to Albuquerque to continue his training under Gracie Barra New Mexico. Training predominantly 7 days per week, multiple times per day upon his return Professor Harwood was awarded his black belt in July 2021 by his long time Professor Tussa.

Professor Harwood trains nearly every day at the school and enjoys sharing the knowledge he has gained over the years. In addition Professor Harwood strength trains every week. Aside from the physical training Professor Harwood also holds a degree in engineering, is an upper level executive manager for a large construction company out of Albuquerque, and also owns a small local construction company.

Professor Harwood seeks to bring a high level of Jiu Jitsu and Grappling training opportunities to Farmington, NM for all skill levels, regardless of age, gender, or athletic abilities.
